march - June 2006: intergenerational Relations
It is often said that one of the most challenging things we face as youth working to bring change in their communities is getting older members of the community to support goals and the methods used to bring about change. For example, some people working to raise awareness about HIV/ AIDS may experience disapproval from older community members when they talk about the ways in which it can be transmitted and the ways that it can be prevented. This disapproval can make it very hard for youths to achieve the change they and other in their communities are working toward.
But many people in the OIYP network also realise that their projects have a much greater chance of success if they have the support of their whole community – which includes the support of people from their parents and grandparents generation. What can be challenging is working out the ways in which the support of older community members can be gained.
How do you suddenly start talking about topics that have always been considered private or taboo to people you have always been taught to respect? How can you encourage older community members to support your project when they consider young people to be irresponsible? How can you encourage other young people to understand that older community members have things to teach them? How can you plan a project that includes older community members throughout the whole planning, implementation and evaluation of the project?
This months Skills Centre webpage will focus on intergenerational relations. The links below provide some resources to support you to work out ways to involve older community members in your project and build community support for your dreams of change.
These resources have been shared by people in the OIYP network and offer some perspectives on considering intergenerational relations in your projects. To share your resources or stories to this bookshelf – please email iypskills@oxfam.org.au
