Nadia Batool

Human Rights - Pakistan (South Asia)

It’s been over four years since the military coup that brought President Pervez Musharraf to power. Since that time, Pakistan has become a country plagued by pressing human rights concerns and a dramatic rise in sectarian violence. To address such concerns, Nadia Batool works as a community mobiliser for Human Development Network, a non-profit organisation that works in various Pakistani communities. Nadia’s major concern is the legal discrimination misconduct against the women and children of Pakistan. Her involvement in this organisation aims to empower the marginalised members of Pakistani society.

In South Asia, women are subjected to extreme forms of gender based discrimination, including honor killings, rape, and torture. Although confronted with extreme political and religious resistance from members of her local community, Nadia remains determined to implement her plan of action. By improving the social attitudes that foster such malignant behavior, Nadi predicts that further ill treatment towards women and children will be prevented. Through providing skills training for impoverished women and children and running community awareness campaigns, Nadia hopes to reduce the number of young people living on the streets and prevent ongoing discrimination against minority groups.
