“Youth unemployment and meaningful youth participation in our communities in PNG is a major dilemma.”
In the year 2003 the national Department of Labour and Employment had shown that over 68,000 youth were unable to get either formal or self-employment. This was due insufficient resources and skills necessary for youths to be engaged in any meaningful and productive activity. In 2005 only 60% of students graduating from high and secondary schools in PNG could make into tertiary institutions.
“And there a countless others who never had the opportunity to get any formal education. In our community at Boroka East settlement on the fringe of Port Moresby City we have 100 unemployed youths.”
By setting up a ‘Sewing and Sewing Skills Training’ Sunivi wants to create job opportunities for young people in her home country.
“At least this program may contribute to alleviate few of the youth’s basic needs”.
