Jenny Mamae works in Honiara as a peer educator for Save the Children Australia. Working in seven provinces across the Solomons, Jenny works with marginalised adolescents and community leaders to train, educate and increase the involvement of these youths in the community. In a country devastated by years of civil unrest there is a widespread need for social change.
For Jenny, the problems associated with substance abuse among youths in the community is of primary importance. “Substance abuse [marijuana and homebrew] is widely spread and common among young men and women in our local community. Due to deteriorating law and order, economic constraints and less opportunities for young people, these illegal substances are being consumed and sold.” With the support of local church leaders, village chiefs and parents Jenny plans to encourage young people to lead and manage youth activities and promote active participation in social development.
