Noor Mosawy
Health - Iraq (Maghreb and Middle East)
While Suddam Hussein’s tyrannical rule now lies in the past, life for Noor and her fellow citizens remains difficult and the future of her country is far from certain. Many challenges loom large for Iraq, including the restoration of civil order, the creation of a new political system and the reconstruction of a nation blighted by war. Within her own community, Noor identifies a lack of clean water supplies, unsanitary conditions, and basic health education as the most pressing problems.
Currently studying medicine at university in Baghdad, Noor is concerned how these factors combine to increase the incidence of water-borne diseases, particularly among young people. With the support of OIYP2004, she is committed to improving the situation by establishing a project team to upgrade water and sanitation facilities and to raise awareness of community health issues.
Noor is keen to articulate the harsh realities of everyday life in Iraq with other OIYP2004 delegates and the international community. “Iraqi people are experiencing conditions that other people cannot imagine and are perhaps afraid to know about”. She hopes that the outside world will not only have the patience to listen, but also the resolve to confront these realities together with the Iraqi people, and to help them realise an ordinary, peaceful life.
“International network will help us when there won’t be many people to help back in our countries, then we will need to get help from every resource to make our own steps to change.”
“I think best benefit from OIYP conferences is networking, learning skills and widening our vision. When we open our minds to more inspiring ideas, more opportunities to develop, we can ourselves contact and search for people back in our homes to put resolutions.”
