Samuel Cabrera

Education -  Philippine (East Asia)

Sam Cabrera has been working with the Aetas (Indigenous peoples) in the Philippines since 2001. Through being immersed in their community, Sam has seen the need for both children and adults to be educated, healthy, and to understand their basic human rights. “Education is the foundation of everything… and most of all I want them to know their rights as a person, as a member of their community and a citizen of the Philippines.”

Whilst working at the Centre for Environmental Social and Applied Research, Sam has volunteered tutorial services to street children and donated his time at the Philippines General Hospital. He has also participated as an exhibit co-ordinator and delegate for conferences on reproductive and sexual health and HIV/AIDS. Sam is currently working with a national political party that focuses on marginalised groups in society. Sam sees OIYP2004 as an opportunity to “share his ideas on initiating and achieving social change” and to gain support for his plan to build a temporary learning centre for the indigenous community.
